The Programme listed below is available to ALL Chichester U3A members. Events are advertised on clipboards at monthly meetings on our table in the hall, these are also circulated on coach trips.

PLEASE READ IMPORTANT INFORMATION BELOW!!!!

  • CHEQUES should be made payable to Chichester U3A. On the back of your cheque please add, in pencil, the event and your membership number.
  • PAYMENTS. Please give or send a deposit or payment in full, whichever is required, to the Organiser. This is the only way of ensuring that you are booked on an event. Please pay your balance one month in advance of a trip. This will save the Organiser having to spend time and money ringing round with reminders.
  • NO REFUNDS. There will be no refunds except if an event is cancelled by us or agreed by the Organiser in exceptional circumstances.
  • INSURANCE. Everyone must be insured for holidays and short breaks. U3A Indemnity Insurance does not cover non-U3A members for day trips.
  • NO COLLECTION for the Organiser should be made on an event in order to avoid embarrassment. Travel Group Organisers, like the rest of U3A, give their services freely. Your appreciation is their reward.
  • HELP THE COACH DRIVER by please ensuring that your litter is taken home and not left on the coach floor.
  • PICK UP & DROP-OFF POINTS are pre-arranged by the Organiser and Coach Company. Please DO NOT ASK THE DRIVER TO DROP OFF at unscheduled stops. This puts pressure on the driver and should be arranged with the Organiser in advance who will decide if the request is appropriate or necessary.
  • THANK YOU FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION

KENSINGTON ROOF GARDEN & FULHAM PALACE

 SUNDAY, 11th APRIL 2010

We will leave Chichester at 8.00 a.m. and may have a coffee stop en route or in one of the many cafes in Kensington. We have a slot at 10.30-11.30 for a guided tour by the Head Gardener of the recently restored roof garden over the old store which used to be Derry & Toms. Afterwards we will go to Fulham Palace (the former residence of the Bishops of London) for a conducted tour. The Palace is a mixture of different architectural styles as it was added to – Tudor Courtyard, Georgian East Front and Tudor Revival Victorian Chapel. The garden is now only 13 acres but includes the famous 17th Century garden. The museum is housed in the early 19th Century part of the Palace. There is a café where light lunches and refreshments can be obtained. Numbers limited to 30. Fully booked but waiting list in operation. Balance of £16 is now due

CHERKLEY COURT: THURSDAY, 3rd JUNE 2010

The visit to Cherkley Court has been cancelled by The Beaverbrook Foundation as they have decided not to open this year. Instead Sylvia proposes doing a visit to Rochester, details below.

ROCHESTER: THURSDAY, 3rd JUNE

Rochester is full of very interesting historical places, all in or around the High Street, so fairly well contained. Places to visit – the Cathedral, Castle, Museum (with its Dickens rooms: next year is its centenary), the Six Poor Travellers House, Restoration House and a number of art galleries, not to mention the shops. Please see information details on the Travel & Outings Group table at the monthly meeting. You are free to visit these as you wish. There will be entrance fees in some places.

Leaving Chichester at 8.00 a.m. with a coffee break on the way, arriving Rochester 11.00 a.m. Departing at 3.00 p.m. with comfort stop on the way back, arriving Chichester at about 6.00 p.m. Deposit of £10 secures your place. Approx cost for coach £18, including gratuity to driver.

KENILWORTH CASTLE & ELIZABETHAN GARDEN: WED, 16th JUNE 2010

English Heritage has just completed a £3 million investment project at Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire. The garden, which was created for Queen Elizabeth I by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, at a time when he still hoped to marry her, has been faithfully reproduced after being lost to the world for over 400 years. It is a garden “designed to seduce and beguile its visitors” and featured in a TV programme in Summer 2009. Visitors are able to experience the sights, sounds and scents that would have greeted Elizabeth I when she first walked the paths. Magnificent carved arbours, a bejewelled aviary, and an 18 ft high Carrera marble fountain are just some of the features which make Kenilworth Castle well worth a visit. Guided tours are available and there is a Tea Room which caters for light lunches. Depart Chichester 7.00 a.m. and return 8.30 p.m. Cost: Approx £26, depending on numbers.

SHORT BREAK: 1 – 6 JULY 2010 – SOUTH DEVON & EAST CORNWALL

Based at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel (Best Western) near Plymouth Hoe. Basic cost for dinner, bed and breakfast plus all coach travel to and from Chichester and during our stay, £430 per person, entrance fees extra.

Proposed itinerary: visiting Exeter, Totnes, Dartmouth, RHS Garden Rosemoor at Great Torrington and other houses and gardens.

All singles taken, waiting list applies. Few twin rooms still available. Deposit of £25 secures your place. (NB. Always worth putting your name on the waiting list, and keeping a note of the dates in your diary, because every year people drop out for one reason or another).

Invoices for balance and entrance fees will be ready for the March meeting. Payment must be made by the end of April at the latest

Organiser: Sylvia Arden-Brown

SALISBURY CITY: 11th AUGUST

Presently arranging a day trip to the city of Salisbury, including a visit to “Arundells”(home and gardens (3 acres) of the late Sir Edward Heath), plus an opportunity to visit Mompression House (NT). This is where the film Sense and Sensibility was taken. Both visits are within the Cathedral Close.
