Monthly meetings form an enjoyable social addition to our programme. These meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month 2.30pm at Christ Church, Old Market Avenue off South Street , Chichester, a contribution of £1 (Visitors £1.50) being charged to cover costs including tea & biscuits.

Lancing College and its History

Our speaker was an archivist at Lancing College for 18 years and she will look at its history since its founding in 1848. Famous alumni include Peter Pears, Evelyn Waugh and Tim Rice.

Robert Carrington explores the popular opera, Porgy and Bess. An amazing achievement for the composer, George Gershwin combining Afro-American music with Opera.

John Brookes has been designing gardens all over the world for about 50 years. He has worked on large and small gardens and he will be sharing his experiences and journeys with us.

From Cocoa Bean to Chocolate Bar

A thousand years ago it was used as a drink and now it is used in its solid form. Our speaker will talk us through her wide knowledge of making Chocolate and has hinted that she may bring samples.

Dr Fifield will illustrate his talk by playing several recordings of this great Lancashire born contralto, who died in 1953. For most people she will always be remembered for her beautiful rendition of ’Blow the Wind Southerly’.

A Soldier’s Story

Diana Beck will give an illustrated talk starting with her Grandfather’s death on the Somme in 1916. She has researched his life through her family, the internet, National Archives and even ‘Ebay’. We shall also hear more on her research in her family history.

Martin Lloyd will give us a thrilling account of how passports have been influenced by assassins and spies. Can you believe a passport can be turned into a killer? Sounds intriguing!!

History of Kew

Sarah Oldridge has worked for the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew for over 25 years and she will lead us through the history and the work of the Gardens at Kew. We shall hear of the Palm House, Pagoda Herbarium as well as many other aspects of the site.

A Passion for Piers

Today’s speaker will talk on the history of that very Victorian edifice, the Seaside Pier. She will show how they developed and were used in by-gone days as well as in more recent times.

In November 2010 he entertained us all with his super talk on Skylab. We look forward to another amusing and informative talk. This time he focuses on human movement and how statistics obtained by measurements of those movements can be used in various scientific investigations..
